Historical Group

Giving our past a place in the future

Formed in 1996, the Historical Group, part of the CLCGB family, is making a positive contribution within The Brigade. Our membership is varied, encompassing all ages and interests, from members throughout the UK.  We have built up a friendly and constructive relationship with our counterparts the Historical Group of the Newfoundland Church Lads' Brigade in Canada. We share a desire to learn about our heritage in a constructive way. We aim to educate members using attractive and interactive methods and an historical information sheet "Looking Back" has been produced along with numerous fact-sheets. The cataloguing and conservation of our National archives along with provision of a Reference Library have all now been in operation for more than twenty five years. We have many more projects still to materialise, so watch this space!

The Historical Group are currently producing a set of very interesting "Factsheets." These can be viewed here.

Major William G. Tilley Obituary

It is with deep sadness I share with you the news that Major William G. Tilley, Newfoundland Brigade Archivist, passed away last Friday. He reached the wonderful age of 103 years and had joined the CLB in 1926. Last year was awarded his 90-Year Gold Service Award and two months ago took part in the 125th Anniversary parade. He was the longest serving CLB member in the world and an inspiration to many generations. During his lengthy life, he receive many awards and accolades, amongst which was Honourary membership of the CLCGB Historical Group. The last honour he received was the Brigade Cross from the Governor in recognition of his "outstanding service to the CLB for over ninety years and for fostering Anglo-Canadian relationships with the CLCGB"

On behalf of all members of the CLCGB, we extend our sincere deepest sympathy to his sons Wayne, Gary and Glen and their families.

It was a privilege to know Maj William G. Tilley and I'm a better person for doing so. He led many to Fight the Good Fight. RIP

Newfoundland 125th Celebrations Report

We wanted to share this report, and photos, with you. Thank you Terry!

Just a short note to let you know the Nfld 125 celebrations at the WE were a great success. The Governor's message went down so well, they reproduced it in their commemorative Order of Service. I read it out during the service before presenting them with a mounted and framed copy.

As normal, special awards are announced and you can imagine my surprise when the Nfld Governor presented me with the Exemplary Service

Medal, attached. I was stuck for words.

The parade was led by Major William G Tilley being driven in a WW2 jeep. Now aged 102 with 91 years' service, he was not allowed to march... as much as he would liked to!!

Perhaps you could consider bestowing a Governor's Commendation upon Maj Tilley for all he has done in the last twenty years for Anglo-UK relations?
